What are the Risk Factors for Esophageal Cancer?

Most cancers are the result of several risk factors; however, it is difficult to identify the risk factors that cause esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer usually affects the cells in the lining of the esophagus. We have listed some of the causes of esophageal cancer or factors that would increase a person’s risk of developing esophageal cancers below:

  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Bile reflux
  • Tense esophageal sphincter
  • Obesity
  • Diet and nutritional deficiencies
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Radiation treatment (chest or upper abdomen)
  • Barrett’s esophagus
  • Frequent drinking of hot liquids
